Sensual Massage Versus Therapeutic Massage

It’s considered extremely inappropriate to ask your massage therapist for an erotic massage! Massage therapists are trained to disengage their work from any sexual context and offer you a neutral and safe place for healing and bodywork.

There are many individuals and establishments in every city that offer sensual massage for fun, as well as sexual therapy and healing work. Instead of risking offending your massage therapist, you can turn for this kind of experience to them.

Erotic Massage and the debate around it
Not considered a “genuine” massage technique, erotic or sexual massage involves sexual stimulation of the client, either by using hands or other body parts to rub against the client’s body (for example, nude massage, sliding the entire body against the client), or through visual and verbal stimulation (erotic dancing or modeling). Either way, the objective is the sexual enticement or release of the client. Other names and nicknames for this kind of massage are “sensual massage”, “full body massage” (that has a very different meaning in therapeutic sense), “Oriental massage” or AMP (Asian Massage Parlors; because numerous Asian Massage Parlors, but by far not all offer it), “happy ending massage”.

In the West, sensual massage and therapeutic massage are very rigorously separated, although some Sexual Tantra practitioners combine the two in the way similar to the Eastern traditions. In some Asian countries where sexuality is not considered “dirty” or “evil”, the border between sensual massage and therapeutic massage is more fuzzy, with the idea that the sexual release is one of many relaxation techniques available, and can be used in conjunction with others.

Many sensual massage and Sexual Tantra practitioners who are serious about the healing part of their work bristle at this separation, feeling that the sexuality is an essential part of human experience, and that this is exactly the field in which there is the most healing needed, at least in the West. They combine the loving touch, therapeutic massage, energy work, breathing and sometimes counseling with the sexual techniques to awaken and heal client’s sexual self, improve the energy flow and release tension and constrictions in both body and mind.

Most massage therapists as well as the law, on the other hand, state that the massage therapy is a space that should under no circumstances contain anything sexual. The (valid) argument is that a massage table is a very vulnerable place to be, physically as well as emotionally, and an easily abused one. To retain the sacred trust between the healer and the healed, nothing should come in the equation that could open the relationship to abuse – a case similar to the relationship of the psychiatrist and his/her patient.
