Amateur Guide to Back Rubs

(Please note this information relates only to *amateur* massage meant to relax and create an intimate, bonding experience. If you have a health issue of any kind, PLEASE seek out a doctor's advice or a trained professional therapist. All the information here is gleaned from my own personal experience, both as an amateur backrubber :-), a touch-hog and a lucky person who was in a romantic relationship with a couple of CMTs. Feel free to add your insight!

Here, we'll focus on adult massage. For infant massage, please search Google.com (or simply click this link).

Amateur Massage - Intro
In our world, the touch between two adults is all too often either completely impersonal, or reserved for a sexual context. While massage between two lovers *can* become a sensual massage, and be a lovely and romantic interlude leading to lovemaking, it's important to understand that the massage is just a massage - it's not a promise of sex or commitment, and it doesn't have to be "paid for" in such coin. This is true for people already in a dating or a sexual relationship as well as friends or complete strangers.

Please, offer massage with no strings attached, and accept a massage in the same way. (It's sometimes good to clarify just what the expectations are for both parties, even if you know the person very well. We are somewhat mixed up regarding touch, especially in the West - better to be up front and be able to relax into the experience fully, after all, massage *is* about relaxation!) Examine your own feelings about the touch too - if you can't offer massage without sexual feelings, this is ok - as long as the other person knows it, and has no problem with it. Even in this case, don't expect more than a pleasure of giving a relaxing experience to another.

If you feel uncomfortable being touched (or being touched by this particular person), say so. If you are fine with a shoulder rub, but uncomfortable with a full body massage, or have certain health or body issues that would make a usual lying-down massage less enjoyable, say so (for example, if you are uncomfortable lying face down because of a tummy-ache or a sore neck, or prefer to be fully clothed, or need soft, slow touch to relax into a more vigorous massage).

Remember, massage is about communication and listening. When you give touch, listen carefully to the feedback - both physical, such as relaxing or tensing of muscles under your fingers, and verbal. If you're getting a massage, say clearly what feels good, and what doesn't. Let your masseuse/masseur know when they "hit the spot", and if you require a stronger/softer/slower touch.
